Accessibility Guide for the Apartment

Before Arrival

  • Some photographs are included on this website to give a general idea of the facilities.
  • Bookings / enquiries can be made via e-mail (lindsay@rothay-lodge.co.uk) or by phone (01159232618).
  • About 6 weeks before arrival, the key will be posted along with printed directions including a map.
  • The nearest bus stop is on the main road 50m from the entrance drive to Rothay Lodge.
  • The nearest train station is at Windermere from which there is a bus service to Grasmere as well as taxis.  However, most taxis are saloon cars and not suitable for electric wheelchairs.
  • The nearest RADAR toilet is in the centre of Grasmere next to the Green, about 1km from the apartment.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

  • There is a car park at the end of the private drive to Rothay Lodge.  Two spaces are allocated for Rothay Lodge and one space for the apartment (as shown on the directions plan sent with the key).  Further free parking is available on the road at the end of the drive.  There are usually spaces in the early morning and in the evening but spaces can quickly be taken during the day at busy times of year.
  • The car park is level and surfaced with compacted slate chippings suitable for wheelchairs.
  • The entrance to the apartment is by a double door, each leaf being 85cm wide and with level access.
  • Parking is 30 metres away from the entrance along the driveway and then across a slate paved patio.
  • The entrance is clearly signed (as shown on the directions plan sent with the key) with a slate sign “Rothay Lodge Apartment” at the entrance gate.
  • Automatic lighting comes on when dark in the car park, driveway and patio areas.

Main Entrance

  • The main entrance is through a double door into the lounge from the patio.  Each leaf is 85cm wide and the keyhole lock is 1m high.
  • A light switch is on the right alongside the entrance door

General (Internal)

  • Narrowest corridor is 95cm wide.
  • Apartment is carpeted throughout with short pile carpet except in the kitchen which has quarry tiles.
  • Smoke alarms are fitted in kitchen, lounge and hall.
  • Electrical sockets are 50cm from floor

Laundry

  • There is a standard size front loading washer dryer in the kitchen.
  • There is also a washing line and pegs provided in the rear yard.
  • Access to the yard is from the rear door which has a single step 16cm high  

Leisure Facilities

  • Access to swimming pools on a daily or weekly rate at the Wordsworth Hotel in the village or at Langdale Timeshare or at Low Wood near Windermere.  

Bedrooms
BEDROOM 1

  • Door width 80cm.
  • Double bed - 5ft.
  • Bed height 70cm floor to top of mattress.
  • Non-feather duvets and pillows.
  • Sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases are cotton.
  • Ensuite bathroom.
  • Largest transfer space available to left or right of bed is 1.4 metres.
  • Bed is movable if more space is required to one side.
  • Largest accessible free space clear of doors and furniture is 3.0m by 1.4m
     

BEDROOM 2

  • Door width 80cm
  • Double bed - 4ft 6”.
  • Bed height 70cm floor to top of mattress.
  • Non-feather duvets and pillows.
  • Sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases are cotton.
  • Ensuite bathroom.
  • Largest transfer space available to left or right of bed is 1.0 metres.
  • Largest accessible free space clear of doors and furniture is 1m by 0.85m

Bathrooms - Both ensuite
BATHROOM 1 (ENSUITE TO BEDROOM 1)

  • Door width 83cm.
  • Wet room shower has no steps.  150cm by 97cm.  Handrails on two sides.  Shower chair on 4 wheels with brakes.
  • Bath height is 48cm with integral bath rails on both sides.
  • Free space in bathroom (free of doors and furniture) is 1.7m by 1.2m.
  • Fixed handrail to right of toilet and dropdown rail to left of toilet (when sitting)  
  • Toilet seat height 42cm.
  • Space to left of toilet is 62cm, no available space to the right.
  • Flooring is non-slip tiling with electric underfloor heating.
  • Good colour contrast between floor, walls and furniture.
  • Space under washbasin is free (no pipes or vanity unit) and washbasin height is 75cm.
     

BATHROOM 2 (ENSUITE TO BEDROOM 2)

  • Door width 65cm.
  • Bath height is 55cm with flexible shower over.
  • Free space in bathroom (free of doors and furniture) is 68cm by 60cm.
  • Toilet seat height 42cm.
  • No space to left or right of toilet.
  • Flooring is tiled
     

Utility Room

  • Door width 80cm.
  • High chair
  • Folding wooden cot and mattress
  • Adjustable ironing board.
  • Henry vacuum cleaner.
  • Other equipment which is kept in the utility room – shower chair on small wheels, seat raiser for toilet, grab handle with suction cups.
     

Self-Catering Kitchen

  • Kitchen is open plan with dining area.
  • Door from lounge 89cm, open doorway from hall (to bedrooms) 88cm.
  • Worktop height 92cm.
  • Electric oven - door opens down below worktop and retracts below the oven, height of lowest shelf 0.4 metres.
  • Sink is 92cm high with cupboards underneath.
  • Gas hob is 92cm high.
  • Flooring - quarry tiles.
  • Evenly lit kitchen with spotlights above work surfaces and dining table.
  • Good contrast between floor, cupboards and other surfaces.
  • Fridge below worktop.
  • Freezer below worktop.
  • Dishwasher below worktop.
  • Washer / dryer below worktop.
     

Outside

  • Patio area at front is surfaced with slate.
  • There is a circular cast iron table and four chairs.  Cushion covers are kept in the utility room.  There are also 2 metal framed deck chairs.
     

Additional Information

  • Information sheet on appliances, etc. is in kitchen.
  • Good mobile phone reception with O2 and some other providers.
  • Superfast broadband with free wireless internet access.
  • The apartment is non-smoking and no pets are allowed.
